Consumable requirements

Set rules like "this SKU needs this insert" with a quantity and packing instructions. Mark a requirement as required, and choose whether a packer can override it. Packers see the requirements in the packout checklist.

How ShipGenius differs

Consumable requirements tie your packing materials to the items that need them, and packers see them in the packout checklist for every order. You decide which ones are required and which a packer may override.

How it works

A consumable is a packing material you keep on hand, such as a carton, a mailer, an insert or tape. A consumable requirement links one consumable to one item and says how to use it. When an order with that item reaches packout, the requirement shows in the packer's checklist.

What a requirement records

  • Quantity Needed: How many of the consumable the item needs.
  • Is Required: Whether the consumable must be used for that item.
  • Is Overridable: Whether a packer may skip or change it when needed.
  • Packing Instructions: Notes shown to the packer on how to use the material.

Examples

  • A glass item that needs bubble wrap every time, which no packer can skip.
  • A subscription box that gets a printed insert, with instructions on where it goes.
  • A product that ships with a gel pack the packer can leave out in winter.

Consumables are items

Consumables are items with packing details added, so they live alongside your products and use the same search and filters. Each one records its category, vendor, a vendor product link for reordering, and the USPS processing category for packaging.

Manage them under Items, in Consumables and Consumable Reqs. Read Consumables for every field and category.
