Why we left ShipStation, ShipHero, and four other tools behind

We ran a real ecommerce brand. We ran a real 3PL warehouse. We spent over a decade learning what it actually takes to keep a fulfillment operation running, and somewhere in that process we also became the developers building custom solutions on top of systems that were never meant to be built on. We know what it costs when a label fails at 11pm. We know what it feels like to have hundreds of packout errors a month and no good way to fix it.

Every platform in this space picks a lane and stays in it. PirateShip is great until your packages get heavy. ShipStation works until you need a real WMS. ShipHero works until you look at the bill. None of them talk to each other, and none of them let you grow without starting over. We watched too many brands stall out because switching software ate weeks they didn't have.

We hit our own wall a few years in. Four different systems running at once. Two developers working full time just to keep the WMS alive. Over $6,000 a month in software when the WMS itself only cost $2,500 to run. The rest was just keeping everything talking to each other. We knew other people were in the same spot because we talked to them constantly.

So we built ShipGenius. We own our carrier connections directly — no Shippo, no EasyPost, no middleware we don't control. We built the label generation engine from scratch. That keeps our costs low and our prices lower than anything else in the market. And we built it so that the account you use to ship your first package is the same account you can use to run a 3PL doing 100,000 orders a month. No migration required.
