Creating an Item

Items are the foundation of your fulfillment workflow. Here is how to create one correctly, with accurate dimensions and weight from the start.

Items are the products you ship. Every item you create in ShipGenius can be attached to orders, used in packout workflows, and tracked through inventory. Setting items up correctly from the start - with accurate dimensions and weight - ensures your rates are calculated correctly every time.

Before you begin

You will need the following information for each item:

  • A unique SKU
  • A brief description
  • Physical dimensions (length, width, height)
  • Weight

Step by step

  1. Go to the Items page from the main navigation.
  2. Click Create New Item in the upper right corner.
  3. Enter a SKU. This is required and must be unique. It is how ShipGenius identifies this item throughout the platform.
  4. Enter a Description. This is required and will appear throughout ShipGenius wherever the item is referenced.
  5. Optionally enter a UPC. UPCs are required when selling through retailers or using 3PL providers, but optional for direct-to-consumer sales with self-fulfillment.
  6. Set the Item Type and Unit of Measure. These default to Product and Each respectively, which is correct for most items.
  7. Scroll to Dimensions and enter the length, width, and height of the item. You can toggle between Imperial and Metric.
  8. Enter the weight of the item.
  9. Save the item.

Why dimensions and weight matter

ShipGenius uses item dimensions and weight to calculate shipping rates and, for OMS and above, to power cartonization and packout workflows. An item without accurate dimensions may result in incorrect rate estimates or errors at the pack station. Take the time to measure accurately when creating items.
